Carinhoso began when the four of us, Donna, Matt, Michael and I, decided we wanted to record some jazz with a string orchestra. A recording wherein the orchestra would not simply accompany, but be fully interactive and, much in the manner of a jazz trio, be an integral part of the writing and performance. With Matt and Michael, both experienced rhythm players, doing the arranging, I felt we could have an ensemble where the arrangers, the performers and the orchestra would be equally challenged and in musical balance. Finding a musical theme for our project was not a problem. Knowing Matt has spent much of his musical life studying Brazilian music culture, it was an easy and obvious choice to make that music the focus of our recording. All four of us have been lifelong jazz musicians and know well the influence Brazilian musicians and composers have had on jazz. In the end, the music on this recording defies categorization; it is not pure jazz, Brazilian or orchestral music. Instead, it is what we wanted from the beginning—very nice music, crafted and performed by superb arrangers and musicians who hope the listener will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it.
